A dramatic riverbank collapse has been captured on video in Mōkau, with a large section of the bank giving way beside a whitebait stand.

A dramatic riverbank collapse has been captured on video in Mōkau, with a large section of the bank giving way beside a whitebait stand.

The footage shows the aftermath. A whitebaiter was reportedly sitting at his stand when the section of riverbank suddenly collapsed, sending a substantial amount of soil and vegetation towards the water.

The incident occurred today, Thursday 8 October, during the current whitebait season, which runs from 1 September to 30 October.

The Mōkau River is a popular location for whitebaiting and other recreational activities.

The video also features Brian, the Mōkau butcher, who provides commentary on the incident.

The footage was originally shared by The Mōkau Butcher and is being shared with readers by The Waikato Advocate in partnership with The Ngāmotu Advocate.

There have been no reports provided to The Waikato Advocate of injuries resulting from the collapse.

The Waikato Advocate understands the footage was captured in the Mōkau area.
