Hamilton music fans have something special to look forward to, with award-winning singer-songwriter Stan Walker announced as the headline performer for the 2027 Hamilton Arts Festival.

Walker will perform on the Rhododendron Lawn at Hamilton Gardens on Saturday, 27 February 2027, with the concert scheduled to begin at 7.30pm.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, adds another major name to the city’s growing calendar of concerts and cultural events.

A return to familiar ground

For Walker, the performance will be more than another stop on a national concert schedule.

The singer spent part of his childhood in the Waikato and attended school in Hamilton, making his return to the city particularly significant.

Festival director Geoff Turkington has welcomed the announcement, highlighting Walker’s connection with the city and the personal nature of his music.

Walker’s career began attracting international attention after he won Australian Idol in 2009 at just 18 years old.

Since then, he has established himself across New Zealand and Australia, releasing multiple successful records and accumulating more than 400 million music streams, according to festival organisers.

The announcement follows a sold-out Auckland concert at Trusts Arena in October, which attracted around 5,000 fans.

Walker has also moved into a new phase of his career as an independent artist, with another studio album expected in early 2027.

Hamilton’s festival continues growing

The Hamilton Arts Festival, also known as Toi Ora ki Kirikiriroa, will run from 19 to 28 February 2027.

Organisers say more than 42,000 people attended the 2026 festival, with approximately 34 per cent travelling from outside the Waikato.

Those figures highlight the festival’s ability to attract visitors as well as provide entertainment for local residents.

Major performances at Hamilton Gardens also offer an opportunity to showcase one of the region’s best-known attractions.

Walker’s concert is expected to be a significant drawcard for next year’s programme.

When do tickets go on sale?

Fans wanting early access can register through the Hamilton Arts Festival website or Eventfinda.

Pre-registration closes on Monday, 9 November, with registered fans receiving access to the pre-sale that day.

General ticket sales are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 10 November 2026.

Further details, including ticket prices and event information, will be available through festival organisers.

For Waikato audiences, the announcement means the chance to welcome one of the country’s best-known musicians back to a place that played a part in his early life.
